The cost of residential housing in Urban Oahu
Oahu is divided into five regions: Anticlockwise, they are Honolulu, the Windward Coast, the North Shore, the Leeward Coast, and Central Oahu,
The primary
urban area of Oahu are the twin cities of Honolulu on its southeast shore
with Pearl city (next to Pearl Harbor) adjacent to it on the west. The
heart of Honolulu is Waikiki and Ala Moana with many tall
high-rises (many of them hotels). Some popular residential neighborhoods in the
east include (from east to west) Hawaii Kai, Kahala and Manoa
(University of Hawaii is located here). A popular residential neighborhood in
the west is Aeia (home to the huge Pearlridge shopping center and Aloha
Stadium). Beyond that is Pearl city and beyond that we have the popular neighborhoods of (from
east to west) Waipahu, Ewa (about 20 miles west on the southwest shore)
and finally Kapolei (being developed as a new urban center,
second to Honolulu). Kapolei is home to the wet ‘n wild water park and the
Disney Aulani resort. Ewa and Kapolei are on the Leeward coast side.
The primary
region for future urban expansion on Oahu is the adjacent central Oahu
with the broad saddle valley between the two mountain ranges (Koolau range
in the east and the Waianae range in the west). A key urban region here
is Mililani.
There is a smaller urban area on the Windward coast side on its eastern
shore, north of Honolulu over the Koolau range. The key towns in windward Oahu
are Kaneohe, Kailua with its subdivision of enchanted lakes and Lanikai, and Waimanalo adjacent.
With a
population of 953,207, Oahu is the most densely populated island in the state
of Hawaii. By far the largest city on Oahu is the state capital of Honolulu,
home to more than 350,000 people. The second largest is East Honolulu with a
population of more than 49,000. The third largest is Pearl City with a
population of more than 46,000. The fourth largest is Kailua with a population
of more than 40,000. The fifth largest is Waipahu with a population of more
than 40,000. The sixth largest is Kaneohe with a population of more than
35,000. The seventh largest is Ewa with a population of more than 27,000. The
eight largest is Mililani with a population of more than 27,000. Kapolei has
just about 23,000.
